My classroom is an Alternate Curriculum Program (ACP) Intermediate Classroom. My ACP classroom serves students with cognitive disabilities in grades 3-5 who require instruction focused on functional academics, social and vocational training. Students participate in this program because of the severity of their disability and the amount of support required to meet their individual needs. Students also participate in integrative classes and activities with their general education peers when appropriate.
In my classroom we will... *have an Individualized Education Program (IEP)! This is a team that determines interventions, plans and supports needed for each student to be successful based on each individual students disability and related needs *work: Classroom Work: In our classroom, we will work on the following skills: calendar time, morning work, classroom jobs, social skills lessons, math rotations, independent task work and boxes, reading rotations. We will also learn different themed Unit Studies lessons incorporating science and Social Studies related topics. We will read a weekly News 2 You article. This composes the core of our academic work. We are always teaching life skills and hygiene all throughout the day.
* go to Specials: We have four different specials this year – Music, PE, Library, and Art
* have Music Therapy: Mrs. Rouch will come to our classroom twice a week for music therapy. During this time your child will work on their IEP goals and academics.
* have Speech: Ms. Paulsen will come to our class once a week for group speech activities. Miss Paulsen is also new to Prairie Wind this year. She and I will work out a schedule for her to work with our class once a week this year. She will do some individual, small and whole group lessons. During this time your child will work on many different skills including reading, social and communication skills.
*go to Recess- We will have two scheduled recess times per day. Recess might look different this year with the equipment. We will always find time to take a break and have some fun!
*have Breakfast, lunch & Snack: Breakfast is grab and go breakfast at the school. Hot Lunch is available for purchase from the school. Your child can bring their own lunch as well. We will have a snack time each day to practice manners and eating as a group
*have Behaviors: I use a positive rewards system in my classroom. Research shows positive reinforcement is a great way to shape behavior. Students earn stickers or Class Dojo monster points for making good choices! Then when they earn a certain amount they get to pick out of our treasure chest and earn a prize. *have FUN! :) In our class we love to smile, laugh and have fun!
*take DATA! Teachers and specialists in our classroom will assess and review student progress regularly.

Communication: Because our kiddos often can’t communicate how their day was at school, I will send home a sheet each and every afternoon! Please be looking for that and discuss it with your child each evening! Please sign it and be sure to please put important notes in there if you need to send me any information. You can communication on the SeaSaw App as well.
