It is now October and band students are learning the Scary Song! They will perform this Scary Song toward the end of the month. In order to be successful at this Scary Song band students must continue to learn concepts from the Sound Innovations book. We are focusing on several important concepts on page 8-9 right now... like using your tongue (not your air) to separate notes, creating a good sound all of the time and reading the notes on the staff are essential for success as the year progresses. In addition to regular practice, students should be using their flashcards at home to help them memorize the notes on the staff. These flashcards are green- students should cut them out and put them in a ziplock back so they don't lose them. Students are encouraged to practice with a metronome- a link to a free online metronome can be found at the left of this page.
With all of the above things to practice, band students should be practicing at home at least 15-20 minutes each day. The next practice check will be on Thursday, November 8th. This means the instrument needs to go home after band lesson days and come back to school again on the next band lesson day. Students should ask their classroom teacher where to keep their band instrument when they bring it to school- each classroom has a procedure for this that is slightly different depending on the size and shape of the classroom. Band students should also make sure to bring their book (Sound Innovations, Book 1), a pencil and their band folder every day.
Not sure what your child should be practicing at home on their instrument? Please ask your child- they would love to show you what they have learned so far in band! You can also look at the box on the bottom right of this page to see an outline of what students should practice at home.
Feel free to contact Mr. Cosby at any time with any questions you have about band lessons- his contact information is in the box on the left of this page.
